On 9 and 10 July 2014, the students of the second semester of Water Engineering undertook a field trip to the former sewage farms around Berlin, where sewage was used to irrigate and fertilize agricultural land until the end of 1970s.
The participating students had the chance to learn how to take a water sample in the field and how to preserve it until it gets transported to the laboratory and analysed. Additionally, a pumping test was conducted and several groundwater parameters (such as temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, Eh, total hardness, and carbonate hardness) were measured in situ by using a flow cell. The exercises were part of the module "Field Hydrogeology".
