UD Students participate in a joint workshop on urban expansion in Indonesia

June 2015, Surakarta - The city of Surakarta, also known as Solo, is a town in Central Java of Indonesia. From 1 to 12 June 2015, Solo was the host for a summer workshop called “Urban Expansion” in collaboration with four other universities from the US, Singapore, and Indonesia, as well as with TUB Campus El Gouna.

The other partner institutions were the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), ans the Sebelas Maret University (UNS). Three senior students from our Master's program in Urban Development had the opportunity to join this international event to work as part of this group of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The two-week activity focused on exploring types of urban growth, while providing alternatives for better connectivity and sustainable development. The participants formed two groups. They first analyzed and assessed the current situation of the remote village of “Waru” located in the South-east, outside of the inner city’s boundaries. Secondly, they were asked to foresee which developments might take place in the future with regards to urban growth.

The workshop was led by Prof. Reinard Goethert from the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT. Beside lectures by experts, field work, and interacting with the locals, the students had the chance to exchange experiences with their fellow participants in additional events such as cultural nights, field trips to temples and local villages, or outdoor activities.
