The Department of Urban Development of TU Berlin Campus El Gouna presented itself at the first Egypt Urban Forum held in Cairo on 14-16 June 2015. More than 300 Egyptian institutions and experts were invited in order to shape Egypt’s future urban agenda and contribute to the World Urban Agenda at the Habitat III Global Conference in 2016.
The booth of the Department of Urban Development was shared with Habitat Unit, which is TU Berlin’s Chair of International Urbanism and Design. Campus El Gouna was presented by the Dean of the Urban Development Department (Prof. Rudolf Schäfer) and by Anas Alhowaily, who is an El Gouna alumnus.
Moreover, our colleague and research associate Dr. Hassan ElMouelhi was responsible for one of the field trips of the Forum organized on the second day. As he is an expert for informal settlements, the tour’s destination was the informal area of Ezbat Khayrallah north of Cairo’s Ma‘adi district. The area is divided by the Ring Road. The smaller southern area is now called Istabl ‘Antar. Here, Dr. El Mouelhi conducts a research on development priorities, planning processes, implementation, and local perceptions of the area’s urban development. A second target area in this research is Manshiet Nasser. The project is called DEVEPER and is done in collaboration with Habitat Unit and Ain Shams University (IUSD).
