Visit to the Recycling Plant of El Gouna

11 December 2014, El Gouna - Have you ever thought about your daily input-output (re)cycle? At the end of the Solid Waste Management course, Prof. Susanne Rotter has initiated a short excursion for the first semester students of Urban Development to learn more about El Gouna’s waste. They visited the recycling site of El Gouna and witnessed the entire course of action, starting from getting the garbage bags from El Gouna to the separation process of the waste.


Conference Responsive Urbanism in Informal Areas

November 2014, Cairo - Students and the team of the Department of Urban Development participated in the conference “Responsive Urbanism in Informal Areas” in Cairo between 25th and 27th November 2014. The participation was part of the third-semester study project of the winter semester 2014/15 dealing with the upgrading of the informal settlement of El Arab in Hurghada.

31 October 2014 - On the sidelines of the second vocational service seminar of the Rotary Club, a high-level meeting took place between H.E. Dr. Laila Iskander, Egyptian Minister of Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements, H.E. General Ahmed Abdallah, Governor of the Red Sea Region, and representatives of TU Berlin Campus El Gouna. The meeting was initiated by the Department of Urban Development, led by Prof. Adrian Atkinson and moderated by Dr. Hassan El Mouelhi.


Excursion to Hamburg


July 2014 - The Master's students of Urban Development embarked on an excursion to Hamburg on 1 July. The aim of the one-day trip was to visit the downtown area as well as some urban development projects in “Hamburg HafenCity”.

June 2014 - The Department of Urban Development undertook an excursion to Wolfsburg, the home of world famous car producer Volkswagen, on 17 June. Our Master's students were accompanied by Prof. Pahl-Weber and Prof. Berten, who guided the group through the industrial history of the city.

May 2014, Berlin - A team of two research associates of the Department of Urban Development and two Master's students gave a joint presentation at the Long Night of Sciences in Berlin on 10 May. They presented the results of a Winter School on the revitalization of Downtown El Gouna, which took place at TUB's Egyptian campus in January this year.

The Long Night of Sciences is an annual event that allows a wide audience to peek into the laboratories of Berlin's three big universities (FU, HU, and TU) and a wide range of independent research institutes, providing a unique insight into their academic activities.

All city-related departments and institutes of TU Berlin came together under the common umbrella of the "House of the City" to introduce their respective projects and initiatives. The presentation of the Department of Urban Development provided an introduction to the prevailing situation in El Gouna and the rational for the Winter School, a summary of the intense preparatory analyses conducted by the Master's students, as well as an overview of the different concepts that were elaborated during the intensive ten-day exercise.

Winter School - VITALIZE IT - Renovating Downtown El Gouna


January 2014, El Gouna - The objective of the Winter School is to develop a concept to renovate the oldest and most central area of El Gouna, so called Downtown. Once the undisputed center of social and cultural activities, this quarter has experienced a slow downturn over recent years. The task at hand is to generate ideas that will turn Downtown into a vibrant center once again, which attracts local inhabitants and tourists alike.
