„In the Region for the Region“ - Research and Teaching Activities of the Urban Development Department in Winter Semester 2013/14

The activities of the Urban Development Department in the winter term 2013/14 were to a high degree dedicated to aspects of urban and regional development in close proximity to the Campus. As a „university in the region and for the region“ TU Berlin Campus El Gouna contributed to analyzing problems and challenges within the direct lneighborhood and to elaborate proposals for problem solutions.

During the Winter School „Renovating Downtown El Gouna“ seven teams of more than more than 40 international students, supervised by a binational group of professors and lecturers, worked out proposals for the revitalization of Downtown El Gouna.

The critical situation of the tourism sector was the background for the International Workshop „Besides Tourism“. Academic experts and professionals attempted to identify and estimate the potentials of non-touristic economic development in the Red Sea Region. One major outcome of the workshop was that more systematic research into this topic is needed as the current availability of data and statistics is insufficient.

As part of their Term Project, Urban Development students elaborated three concepts and feasibility studies for a future „Business Park El Gouna“. One of the proposals entailed the idea of a „Research and Technology Park“.

The main results of all projects conducted by the Urban Development Department will be made available to the interested public and addressed to relevant actors and stakeholders. Partial outcomes have already been presented to the local and regional public at the 3rd, 4th and 5th Community Forum El Gouna 2030.

Since 2012, the Community Forums offer a platform for the continuous and systematic presentation and discussion of strategic topics of the urban development of El Gouna and its neighborhood in the Red Sea Region. Through the activities of the Forum, TU Berlin Campus El Gouna promotes and supports the development of El Gouna towards a green city. In addition, it helps to activate the potential and opportunities of the Campus in the realm of technology transfer. In the meantime, the Forum has become a robust institution with an average number of 50-60 participants. There is no formal membership. Everybody who is interested in an open dialogue on issues of local and regional development is invited.

A very special Term Project of the Urban Development Departement was dedicated to „Informal Settlement Zerzera in Hurghada“. The students of the third term analysed the problems, needs, and perspectives of this area and developed three proposals for interventions with the aim of upgrading the district and improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. After finalizing the project reports, the students hope to present the core results to the responsible authorities in Hurghada.
