TUB Delegates

21/22 February, Cairo - An interdisciplinary team of two TU Berlin delegates was invited by the German Embassy to participate in the workshop prior to the 37th Cairo Climate Talks. The workshop took place in the Safir Hotel in Dokki, Cairo. Experts in the field of energy efficiency discussed Egypts challenges and opportunities in this field.

All three sessions where followed by an intense discussion amongst the invited guests. One of the participants mentioned that "the cheapest energy is the one that you do not use" and highlighted Egypts potential to reduce fossil energy demand through increased efficiency in the industrial sector and through an enforced building code.

The TU delegates, Felix Hartenstein (Dept. of Urban Development) and Christoph Banhardt (Dept. of Energy Engineering) presented the results of their  Carbon Accounting estimations of El Gouna. This research was done as part of an interdisciplinary term project in the winter semester 2014/15. The students of Urban Development and Energy Engineering worked together to quantify the carbon footprint of El Gouna and elaborated measures to reduce these emissions. It was found that 40% of El Gouna's emissions are related to buildings, while almost half of these are accounted to only by construction. It was the highlighted that most of the construction related emissions could be prevented by using local materials and raising awareness for bearing wall constructions to minimize the extensive use of reinforced concrete in skeleton constructions.

The 37th Cairo Climate Talks were concluded by a public discussion at the German Science Center (DWZ) on 22 February 2016. The panel was opened by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Cairo, H.E. Julius Georg Luy, and H.E. the Minister of Environment, Dr. Khaled Fahmy. Both highlighted Egypts responsibility after the climate accords of COP 21.
